Mine Reclamation - Care & Maintenance

NUNA's experience in the realm of reclamation, care and maintenance is born out of its invovlement in many of the major Canadian arctic mine developments and exploration programs.  NUNA’s management team and experienced northern operation personnel have a combined 100+ years of experience in the design and execution of remote arctic mine developments and reclamation projects such as Port Radium and Pine Point mines located in the Northwest Territories, Canada.

NUNA understands and adheres to the strict environmental regulations that govern reclamation of mine sites including handling of hazardous materials (hydrocarbon contaminated soils, reagents), tailings reclamation and site rehabilitation. Our site-specific procedures are based on our Integrated Health, Safety and Environment Management System.

Care & Maintenance
Public Works Government Services, Government of Canada, Giant Mine, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada

In 2004, DETON'CHO / NUNA Joint Venture was contracted by Public Works Government Services Canada to provide care and maintenance at the Giant Mine site. The site carries pre-existing environmental conditions, including the 237,000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide stored underground.  DETON'CHO / NUNA’s services covered maintaining site facilities, equipment, underground access and hoisting and pumping equipment;site security; pipe work upgrade;demolition of bulk fuel storage and selected buildings; and the reconstruction of the Baker Creek channel over a linear distance of 600 m, creation of a new stream channel and construction of a 70' clear span steel bridge to support heavy equipment traffic.

Under the Giant Mine Care and Maintenance contract DETON'CHO / NUNA performed construction services to support a trial project designed to optimize methods of freezing the underground arsenic storage chambers. Work included:

• Surface drilling by a variety of methods (mud rotary, coring and down hole hammer) and installation of piping for a mechanical freezing system.
• Instrumentation installations.
• Underground development required for horizontal drilling and freeze pipe installation.
• Surface civil works and site grading.
• Bulkhead construction.
